Home Economics began as part of the Extension Service in 1900 with the arrival of Martha Van Rensselaer and the establishment of the Farmers' Wives Reading Course. Robert W. Madden came to Cornell in 1941, and joined Theta Xi fraternity. He left for the service in 1943, married Dorothy Scott that year, and was killed in an airplane crash in 1944.
